Two of the main regions in South Dakota that have data reported on them actually have average annual salaries below the state average. The Eastern South Dakota Nonmetropolitan Area has an average annual salary of $55,660. The Western South Dakota Nonmetropolitan Area’s average annual salary is $55,320. As you can see, these two areas are very similar in how much they pay their dental hygienists. One can speculate that the reason their annual salaries are lower than the state average is because they are nonmetropolitan areas, so perhaps they include some more rural areas, which would have lower salaries and in turn lower the average for the region. Whatever the cause, these areas do have lower average annual salaries for dental hygienists than the state average, but only by $2,000 or less.
